What you can do at home

Dermal fillers and Botox offer you several advantages when it comes to improving your appearance. But there is always the chance of mild bruising.

At SATINI Cosmetic Clinic, Dr Nadja makes the procedure easy and comfortable enough to avoid the risk of bruising. In addition, she takes some extra steps to reduce any blood vessel damage while performing cosmetic procedures. However, we recommend the following tips to prevent unpleasant bruising before and after dermal fillers or botox.

  • Avoid Taking Blood Thinners

Before you decide to go for Botox or Dermal fillers, stop using the blood thinning medications two days prior because they keep the blood from clotting and increase the chance of bruising. Some of the common blood thinning agents include:

  • Aspirin
  • Vitamin E or Fish Oil
  • Ibuprofen
  • Garlic
  • Ginkgo biloba
  • Omega-3
  • Flaxseed oils
  • Ginseng
  • Ginger
  • Green tea
  • Avoid Alcohol

Wine, beer, or any liquor with alcohol can make you bruise more. It enlarges the blood vessels and thins your blood. So it would be best if you avoid drinking alcohol before having the injectable procedures. It is also important not to drink for several days after the treatment.

  • Apply Arnica Cream

Arnica cream helps reduce bruising. Dr. Nadja suggests her clients start applying this cream to their faces 2-to 3 days before treatment. You may find arnica supplements as well. But most of them are homoeopathic, and there is no objective evidence that they work.  It speeds up the healing and reduces bruising and swelling from injectable procedures. You can purchase arnica cream at the supermarket or any chemist.

  • Avoid Having a Facial Treatment

We know that there is nothing more relaxing than a soothing facial treatment. The facial massage opens up your blood vessels to bring more nutrients to the skin. But it also dilates your blood vessels and puts you at risk of bruising. So, avoid having a facial treatment for a minimum of 24 hours before and after your injectable treatments.

  • Eat Pineapple

Of course, pineapples taste great when you blend them in a smoothie. They contain an enzyme, bromelain, that helps prevent bruising. Try eating them before and after getting botox or dermal fillers. You can also treat yourself to your favourite pizza Hawai or pineapple lollies.

  • Cold Packs

Applying cold packs to your face helps prevent bruising. You can start using ice packs straight after you had your treatment done. Keep your head a little elevated while gently applying a cold pack or a few ice cubes covered in a cotton cloth. If desired, continue using it on and off for 2-3 days after the procedure.

  • Avoid Vigorous Exercise

While there is little to no downtime for a cosmetic procedure, Dr. Nadja suggests avoiding vigorous exercise that increases your blood flow, heart rate, and blood pressure. In addition, extreme physical activity may exacerbate broken blood vessels at the injection site, making the bruises more visible.

  • Avoid Touching The Injection Site

You mustn’t touch or massage the injection site for a minimum of 24 hours after receiving dermal filler or botox. The slightest pressure can cause trauma to blood vessels, which leads to bruising.
