Kiss Upper Lip Lines Goodbye With Dermal Filler!
The only place everyone wants to see a bar code is in shopping. But similar lines can start to appear above the lips and around the mouth that do not look appealing. These lip lines are also known as smokers’ and perioral lip lines. Whether you have smoked or not, these wrinkles and creases begin to appear due to ageing. Several other factors, including genetics, sun exposure, and alcohol consumption, can worsen barcode lines. At Satini Cosmetic Clinic, we have treatment options that provide substantial and long-lasting results.
Dr Nadja Haub says
One of my preferred treatment options for upper lip lines is using a mix of dermal filler and Botox. To do this, I mix a small amount of dermal filler with 8 units of Botox. Then I gentley insert a small cannula close to the upper lip lines and gently loosen the skin above the lips. This process creates a small space just below the upper lip lines.
I then gently inject the mix into that space and fill the lines from under the skin. The procedure takes 30 minutes and most people do not need any downtime. Results typically last between 12 to 18 months.
What are Upper Lip Lines or Barcode Lines?
The vertical lines around the lips recall the sequence of thin and thick lines on product packaging. These are exclusively female wrinkles caused by repeated muscle contractions. On top of that, upper lip lines are more frequent among female smokers and people who exaggeratedly contract their lips while speaking. In addition, light and medium skin tones exposed to sunlight are more prone to pronounced upper lip lines.
The Upper Lip Lines Treatment Options
Lines and wrinkles on top of the upper lip can be bothersome. Often, women have already tried topical products and creams with little success.
Whereas some anti-ageing creams such as retinoids, vitamin C or peels can make a difference, a cosmetic treatment is often required to get actual results. Let’s learn about some effective cosmetic treatments that prove beneficial in fading the upper lip lines.
Microneedling
Microneeding with Derma Pen 4 improves the appearance of upper lip lines because it stimulates collagen synthesis and tightens the skin. The Dermapen has a disposable tip containing many tiny sterile needles. These needles penetrate the skin repeatedly, causing hundreds of micro-injuries to the skin’s upper layer.
These micro-injuries stimulate the natural healing powers of the body. As a result, throughout 4 to 6 weeks, the skin on top of the lips looks and feels tighter. You may need a series of 3-4 that are spaced one month apart for best results. The procedure takes 30 minutes, and most people do not need downtime.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are natural fruit acids. The doctor or nurse will apply the peel to the skin. The peel removes dead skin cells and can sometimes also remove parts of the outermost layer of the skin. When the damaged skin peels off the surface, the smoother skin underneath heals and grows, making your skin look younger and healthy. Please remember that a peel will often only smooth superficial lines but is not a good treatment option for deeper lines.
Botox For Upper Lip Lines
A small amount of Botox gently injected on top of the lip can help reduce upper lines. This is also called the lip flip, which is quite famous for younger people who want their lips to look fuller without using lip filler.
Whereas this treatment is popular with younger women to enhance their lips, it often does not help much to improve upper lip lines. Results can be very subtle, and often, women would like to achieve more dramatic results for their bothersome upper lip lines.
Dermal Filler For Upper Lip Lines
In most cases, dermal fillers are a popular option. They work by hydrating the area, replenishing the lost volume, and smoothening lines for a youthful appearance.
The practitioner goes for several approaches when it comes to treating barcode lines. A tiny dose of lip filler injected along the lip border can help plump the lips and eliminate the upper lip wrinkles.
We prefer a technique with a small cannula gently inserted under the wrinkly skin on top of the lip. We then very gently move the cannula up and down. This creates a tiny space under the skin where we inject the dermal filler.
At Satini Cosmetic Clinic, we often provide a mixture of dermal filler and botulinum toxin to our patients with prominent smokers or barcode lines. It aids in relaxing the muscles that cause the streaks. This limits the muscle’s movement, reducing skin folding and preventing the upper lip lines from worsening. In addition, lip fillers add definition and structure to your lips and are incredibly effective in tackling skin ageing.
