Forehead wrinkles are a typical sign of ageing. They can be frustrating and many people want to get rid of them.  Natural ageing is very much to blame, but genetics also play an essential role in the severity of these bothersome wrinkles. Unfortunately, it is impossible to avoid ageing, but many treatment options are available for ridding your face of forehead lines. But Botox remains one of the most effective treatments for forehead wrinkles. So let’s get to know everything about forehead botox.

Causes of Forehead Wrinkles

Many factors are responsible for forehead wrinkles. The most important factor is probably the forehead muscle. Some people, especially athletic men, tend to have a heavy forehead muscle that moves a lot with their facial expressions. Just these repetitive movements can cause wrinkles in the skin that lies on top of the forehead muscle. On top of that, the skin loses its elasticity as we age making it more prone to wrinkles.  But genetic factors also play quite a significant role which means that when other family members have a tendency to develop wrinkles in the forehead, you may have the same inherited problem.

How to Reverse Forehead Wrinkles?

There are quite a few treatment options out there but the most effective and longest-lasting is definitely Botox. Generally speaking, it is easier to reverse forehead wrinkles if lines are not too deeply set into the skin. But even deeper lines will at least appear smoother after Botox. It is one of the best solutions that work wonders for the skin and has become a famous go-to treatment for forehead creases and fine lines.

If you chose to have Botox, you should always use high-quality skincare to maintain the result. Many skin creams, hydrating serums, and moisturizing lotions help reverse superficial lines and wrinkles. Other treatments such as microneedling, plasma and laser also help smooth fine lines and wrinkles but compared to Botox they are less powerful and you have to treat the whole face and can not just target one particular area of the face.

Botox acts as a miracle for moderate to severe wrinkles. It prevents the muscles from contracting and smoothens the wrinkles. As a result, it prevents facial wrinkles from developing for three to four months.

How Does Botox work for Forehead Wrinkles?

Botox is an FDA-approved injectable solution that treats moderate to severe glabellar lines, crow’s feet, and horizontal forehead lines. It is actually a purified protein form of the bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. It works as an effective neuromodulator that stops the release of nerve signals to relax the muscles.
The botulinum toxin inhibits the activity of muscles and allows the affected forehead area to clear the creases and lines. Botox injections provide forehead and brow lift, enhance your facial appearance, and improve your eyebrow look.

One of the best things about Botox is it trains your muscles to avoid making deeper wrinkles in the future. As a result, patients who receive regular botox injections are less likely to get deeper forehead lines and creases.

Can it happen that the forehead feels heavy after Botox?

Yes, this is probably one of the most common problems after a Botox treatment for the forehead. And even for experienced I injectors, it can sometimes be challenging to treat a forehead properly. The problem is that the stronger the forehead muscle is, the deeper the forehead wrinkles will look. And this also means that the injector needs more Botox to relax this bigger muscle and smooth the lines. But if this big muscle that is right on top of the eyebrows (see the picture below) becomes too relaxed, it will add extra weight to the eyebrows. When this happens, your eyebrows and forehead will feel heavy. The good news is that this will always resolve. Most people will get better after 2 or 3 weeks and some people will need a bit longer than that but it will always stop after 3 to 4 months.

Ways to prevent a heavy forehead feeling

There are several ways to prevent you from getting a heavy forehead. One option is to relax the tiny, little muscles that you have in between the eyebrows. These muscles help lift up the eyebrows and as a result, they may feel less heavy. Another option is microbotox. This means that only very small droplets of Botox will be injected into the skin that lies on top of the forehead muscles. As a result, only the muscle fibres right underneath the skin will be relaxed, and the rest of the muscle is still able to move. This often prevents a heavy forehead feeling.

Ways to treat a heavy forehead

Unfortunately, there are not many ways to treat a heavy forehead and for most people, it means that they will have to wait it out. So prevention really is the key here. If you have not had the area in between the eyebrows injected, you can try and inject it so that the eyebrows will be slightly lifted. This can sometimes relieve the symptoms a little bit.

Forehead Botox Procedure

It is crucial to get forehead botox from an experienced injector. The procedure itself is quite simple and fast and you can really do it during your lunchtime break. During your consultation with a Botox treatment provider, he/she will examine your forehead and design a treatment plan for you. Usually, 10 up to 30 units of botox are required to smooth forehead lines and wrinkles. More units of botox will be needed to fade the look of deeper lines and wrinkles.

The doctor or nurse will carefully place the botulinum toxin across the injection sites in the forehead.  The injections are usually provided with very fine needles, and the procedure is safe and painless. To minimize discomfort, you can have a numbing cream applied to the forehead and some treatment providers use ice or a vibrating device to ease the discomfort. Most people describe their level of pain as 2-3 out of 10. The whole process might take 20 minutes or less than an hour.

Forehead Botox Aftercare

Forehead Botox is a non-invasive treatment that usually does not need any downtime. Most people can return to normal activities after this cosmetic procedure. However, mild pain, swelling, bruising, redness, and tenderness can happen at the injection sites.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for one or two days
  • Make sure you rest a bit more on the day of your treatment, so you can heal better
  • You can take paracetamol or codeine for pain
  • But do not take any anti-inflammatories, they can make you bruise
  • Try not to touch or rub the treated area as the Botox needs to stay in place

A mild headache after the botox treatment is not uncommon and this usually gets better after a few hours.

How Long Does Forehead Botox Last?

Botox usually lasts for 3 to 6 months, and effects begin to decrease by the fourth month of the treatment. It is recommended to schedule a consultation
every 3 to 4 months to maintain results. Some people may even get 6 months out of their treatment and in contrast to that, a few people will get less than 3 months. This often happens to men who have strong forehead muscles and go to the gym quite often which means that strong muscles that move a lot need more Botox and it often does not last that long.
