Dermal Filler or PRP-which one works best?

PRP treatment, or Platelet Rich Plasma, is one of the most natural ways to enhance the health of your skin. This is because it is derived from your own natural growth factors from your own blood and this makes it absolutely natural. In contrast to that, Dermal fillers are a form of a natural gel derived from your skin, and even though it is very natural, it is processed in a lab to make it thicker. Depending on how processed it is, the gel can be thicker or thinner which adds volume and hydration to the skin.

By adding fillers to your PRP treatment, you can achieve a more youthful look by lifting your face and restoring radiance and glow to your skin. Let’s get into more detail about the benefits of adding fillers to your PRP treatment.

What is PRP Treatment?

PRP Treatment, or Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment, is a cosmetic treatment used to reduce signs of ageing and rejuvenate skin.

For this treatment, the doctor will first take a small vial of blood from you and put it in a centrifuge. After the centrifuging, the red cells in your blood are quite heavy and will stay at the bottom of the vial. On top of the red cells will be the plasma. This plasma or “golden liquid” contains many platelets and growth factors. These can stimulate collagen in your skin and aid in reducing wrinkles and fine lines. Your overall skin texture and tone will be improved and your skin will look more radiant and healthy.

PRP Treatment is also a great way to treat dark circles under the eyes.  And many people find that it also smoothes fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes.  This popular treatment helps to effectively reduce signs of ageing and restores your natural beauty.

How Does Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Work?

Your plasma contains more than 30 different growth factors. One of the most important growth factors that doctors think works particularly well is the so-called Epidermal Growth factor. A few studies could show that this particular factor is able to rejuvenate skin, especially around the eyes. But it also improves radiance and glow of the skin and lifts the folds between the nose and mouth.

But there are many other growth factors in plasma and we still have a lot to learn about them. The fact is, that the plasma or blood facial has become so popular because people look and feel rejuvenated and fresher.

What is a plasma or blood facial?

When you have a blood or plasma facial, the doctor or nurse will take a small amount of blood from you. This blood is in a vial and will be centrifuged at a high speed for 10 minutes. Due to the spinning, the heavier red blood cells will be pushed to the bottom of the vial and the yellow plasma will stay on top of it. The doctor or nurse will then gently inject the plasma with its valuable growth factors under your skin.

The benefits of a blood facial are:

  • Restores radiance to your skin
  • Enhances the glow of your skin
  • Provides a mild lifting effect
  • Improves dark circles under the eyes
Dermal filler versus PRP plasma treatment

What is dermal filler?

Dermal fillers are different to plasma. They are thinner or thicker gels made of natural sugar in the skin called “hyaluronic acid”. This gel is gently injected into the skin or deeper, close to the bone. The thicker gels help lift the face or add extra volume and the thinner gels can be used to fill out wrinkles and lines or fill lips.

What are the Pros and Cons of dermal filler versus plasma?

Both types of treatments have got their advantages and disadvantages.

Dr Nadja Haub says

In my experience, younger people who are not really in for the dermal filler yet prefer the plasma facial. And then there are people who really do not like the thought of getting dermal filler and for them plasma is often a good alternative. But the really nice thing about dermal filler is that results are instant and I think that’s why they are so popular. But there are also a lot of people who combine both treatments for superior results.

Let’s look at the pros and cons of plasma and dermal filler.

Plasma                                                                                                                                        Dermal Filler

Absolutely natural                                                                                                                      Very natural but processed in a lab

Rejuvenates the whole face                                                                                                      Can rejuvenate certain areas of the face, such as cheeks, lips

Provides a minor lift to the skin on your face                                                                        Thick filler can lift the face quite visibly

No risk of allergic reactions or infections                                                                               Very rarely causes allergic reactions or infections

Absolutely natural look                                                                                                              Can look unnatural if overdone

If you are not sure which treatment works best for you, it is best to contact a qualified doctor or nurse to look at your options.

Adding Filler to PRP Treatment

You can easily combine dermal filler with platelet-rich plasma. The plasma will lift your skin and add a natural glow and radiance to the skin. The dermal filler helps lift the face and further helps stimulate collagen to firm and thicken your skin.  All in all, combining PRP with filler has become a great option for those looking for an effective way to reduce wrinkles and other signs of ageing without resorting to surgery or harsh chemical treatments.
