Very small amounts, usually 4 units of botulinum toxin will gently be injected into the muscle that surrounds your lips. The injection temporarily relaxes the muscles around your lip. This causes the part of your upper lip that’s inside your mouth to “flip” upward and outward, giving your lip a fuller appearance.

Botulinum toxin will not freeze your face. When injected by an appropriately qualified doctor, it will retain your natural look and facial dynamics.

A Lip Flip turns your upper lip outward and makes it look fuller. We do this by injecting small amounts of Botulinum Toxin into the muscle that surround your lips. As a result, the muscle will become more relaxed and stop pulling on the lips. Due to this, the lip flips outwards and appears bigger but we do not actually add volume to the lips.

In contrast to that, when we use dermal filler, we actually inject gently a gel-like substance into the lip. So, in summary, a Lip Flip uses a little trick and just makes your lip just look fuller- whereas dermal filler really adds volume to your lips.

It is important to know that lip fillers usually last for a year up to 18 months. A lip flip will last 3 to 4 months but it is also an easy procedure that can be redone at any time.

People who opt for a Lip Flip usually want their lips to look fuller but are not keen on having dermal fillers as yet. A lip flip will make your lips look fuller in the most natural way. You can expect your lips to appear 1 to 3 mm bigger.

Most people will notice that it starts working after 3 to 4 days. Most people find that the maximum result is visible after 2 weeks. Botulinum Toxin usually lasts for 3 to 4 months. Many people find that the more often they use Botulinum Toxin the longer it will last.

Lip Flip is considered a safe and low-risk procedure, mainly because very small amounts of botulinum toxin are injected around the lips. Please be aware that this treatment, even though it is a very common procedure, is not approved by Medsafe as yet. Despite this, it is legal and safe to use if injected by a qualified practitioner. 

Some people will notice a feeling of numbness around the lips. This will usually subside within a few days, in rare cases, it can last up to 4 weeks. Rarely do people report that they feel they are unable to whistle or spit even though they can whistle.

Very few cases have been reported where people are unable to drink from a straw, had trouble keeping fluids in their mouth after drinking or noticed a drooping corner of their mouth.

It is important to have a lip flip performed by a medical professional, ideally a doctor or a nurse who works closely together with a doctor.

Botulinum toxin is being used in much higher dosages for the treatment of bladder dysfunction and cerebral palsy with a very good safety record.

Usually, this procedure does not trigger cold sores but if you get cold sores a lot, Dr Nadja Haub will prescribe you the antiviral drug Aciclovir for one or two days after the procedure.

The Lip Flip really is a very simple and fast office procedure that you can have during your lunch break. It only takes a few minutes.

No. You do not need any downtime. The skin on top of your lip may feel a bit uncomfortable for a few hours after this procedure. But this is usually very mild and does not cause any problems.

The Lip Flip requires 4 units of botulinum toxin which costs $ 66.

That really depends on how deep your barcode or smoker’s lines are. If you have just a few lines that are only visible when you move your face, you may notice that these lines become smoother. But if your lines are deeper, then you may not notice much of a difference. If this is the case, you may be better off with a barcode signature dermal filler treatment.
