Different Types Of Lip Injections
Lip injections are a popular cosmetic procedure due to their ability to plump and contour the lips. And when we talk about lip injections, most people think of lip filler. But do you know that there are other lip treatments available that can provide stunning results?
Some people may not like lip filler which is a gel-like substance that you get injected in and around the lips. This is often because they may be opposed to the idea of altering their lip’s natural shape or they may feel that lip fillers are unnatural. Or other people may not like the idea of lip filler simply because they do not like the look of it and prefer their own natural lips.
So let’s look at what else is out there to naturally shape and beautify your lips.
Dr Nadja Haub says
A lot of people prefer to have a lip flip or PDO threads to contour their lips rather than lip filler. This is often because they are worried that they may end up looking overfilled or unnatural with lip filler. Or often, they are not in for lip fillers as yet and would like to try something else. The good news is that all three treatment options can provide quite stunning results.
What other lip injections could work for me?
PDO Threads To Define Lips
PDO Threads can give your lips a beautiful and more contoured shape. Over recent years, they have become quite a popular treatment option to reshape and define lips.
What are PDO Threads for the lips?
PDO (polydiaxone) threads have been used by surgeons for many years to stitch up wounds. Over the last decade, these threads have become quite popular in cosmetic medicine. This is because they are able to stimulate the production of collagen in the skin. As a result, the skin becomes thicker, healthier and appears more lifted. Over the course of 3 to 4 months, the threads will dissolve and turn into carbon dioxide which means they are not toxic.
When you have PDO threads for your lips, the doctor or nurse will use very tiny and thin threads. These will be gently inserted along the border of your lips. Over the next few weeks, the threads stimulate the production of collagen along your lips. As a result, your lips will look more contoured and shaped and also a bit fuller.
How long do PDO Threads last for the lips?
For most people, results will last between 12 to 18 months. But this can vary from person to person. Some people request a renewal of their threads after only 9 months and in contrast to that, others may only come back after 2 to 3 years.
What does the procedure involve?
The procedure is a fast, simple and effective office procedure but please allow some extra time. This is so the doctor or nurse can apply some numbing cream to your lips before you have the threads.
- PDO threads come in various lengths and thicknesses and are inserted into the lips using a fine needle or cannula.
- The threads are then pulled taut to lift and contour the lips. This creates a fuller, more youthful appearance of the lips.
- The procedure typically takes around 30 minutes to complete.
What do I need to do after the procedure?
You may experience some swelling, bruising, or tenderness after the procedure. But these side effects are temporary and subside within a few days. Should you have any discomfort or pain, you can take paracetamol or a small amount of codeine but please refrain from taking ibuprofen or diclofenac as these can make you more prone to bruising.
We do not recommend that you apply ice packs. This is because the threads cause a degree of inflammation in the skin close to your lips which stimulates collagen. If you apply icepacks, this could suppress the important inflammation and could lead to inferior outcomes.
If you have a tendency to get cold sores, we also recommend that you take some aciclovir to prevent cold sores.
Before And After PDO Threads for the lips
Are PDO Threads for my lips safe?
The tiny threads which are only a millimetre thick and quite short only very rarely cause any problems. One of these rare problems is that the thread sticks through your skin and is visible. if this is the case, the thread can be very easily removed.
If you have a tendency to get cold sores close to your lips, you may need a prophylactic tablet to prevent these. This is because the threads can irritate the nerves close to your lip and as a result, the nerve releases the herpes virus that causes cold sores. But apart from that, the threads really are quite safe if performed by a qualified doctor or nurse.
Botox Lip Flip
The lip flip is different to lip filler. Unlike lip fillers, which add volume to the lips, the lip flip uses Botox which works by relaxing the muscles around the mouth. Due to this, the upper lip lifts slightly, creating a more defined and fuller appearance.
Here’s what you need to know about the lip flip with Botox:
Here is how it works:
During a lip flip procedure, a small amount of Botox is injected into the muscles around the upper lip. The Botox temporarily relaxes these muscles, causing the upper lip to lift slightly, exposing more of the pink tissue inside the lip. This creates the appearance of a fuller, more defined upper lip without adding any volume.
The procedure takes only a few minutes to complete, and there’s no downtime required. Patients can resume their normal activities immediately after the treatment.
Who It’s For:
The lip flip with Botox is an ideal treatment for those who have a thin or undefined upper lip, or those who want to enhance the appearance of their lips without undergoing a more invasive procedure. It’s also a great option for those who are concerned about the risk of allergic reactions or other complications associated with lip fillers.
It’s important to note, however, that the lip flip is not suitable for everyone. Those who have a very thin upper lip or who have significant asymmetry in the lips may not see significant results from the treatment. Additionally, those who have a history of severe allergic reactions to Botox or other cosmetic treatments may not be good candidates for the procedure.
Results and Duration:
The results of a lip flip with Botox are subtle but noticeable, with most patients seeing a slight lift in their upper lip within a few days of the treatment. The full effects of the treatment will typically be visible within a week or two and can last for up to four months.
It’s important to note that while the results of the lip flip are temporary, the treatment can be repeated as needed to maintain the desired appearance.
Potential Side Effects:
Like any cosmetic procedure, the lip flip with Botox does come with some potential side effects. These can include temporary redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site, as well as mild tingling or numbness in the lips. These side effects are typically mild and resolve within a few days.
In rare cases, patients may experience more serious side effects such as muscle weakness or difficulty speaking or swallowing. However, these side effects are extremely rare when the procedure is performed by a qualified and experienced medical professional.
In Conclusion:
The lip flip with Botox is a safe and effective way to enhance the appearance of the upper lip without the need for surgery or lip fillers. If you’re interested in this treatment, it’s important to speak with a qualified medical professional who can help you determine whether you’re a good candidate for the procedure and ensure that you receive the best possible results.
