All you need to know about Botox in Christchurch-the facts

Botox targets fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing the small muscle in your face.

What areas can you treat with Botox?

Botox can help reduce wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes, between the eyebrows, and around the mouth. The FDA approved Botox for upper face wrinkles, but doctors also use it for lower face treatments.

FDA-Approved

Forehead Botox

This can reduce lines and wrinkles on the forehead caused by a large forehead muscle or facial movements like raising eyebrows or frowning. It can also lift the eyebrows slightly, giving a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

An experienced injector should perform your forehead Botox. This helps prevent issues like eyebrow droop, which can occur from using too much Botox or injecting it in the wrong place.

In Christchurch, some injectors prefer to use a technique called microbotox for the forehead. Micro Botox uses small Botox injections on the forehead for a natural and subtle appearance. This technique is beneficial for people with heavy eyebrows or eyelids. Satini Cosmetic Clinic in Christchurch mainly uses Microbotox on foreheads for the best results.

Crows Feet Botox

Botox around the eyes, commonly known as crow’s feet, can soften the fine lines that appear when smiling or squinting. People also call the crow’s feet the happy lines; not everybody wants them to disappear. Depending on how much Botox you use, you can either soften them a little or make them disappear.

At your first appointment, we will discuss your goals and expectations to determine how much Botox you want. Read more about Crows Feet Botox here.

Frown Line Botox

Doctors can also use Botox to treat frown lines, which are the vertical lines that appear between the eyebrows when frowning. The frown lines are often people’s first concern when seeing a cosmetic doctor. They can give you a grumpy or tired look, and Botox can fix that well.

Non-FDA approved Botox

You can also treat other areas with Botox. Although the FDA has not officially approved it, many doctors still treat these concerns. We know it is safe, and problems are rare.

Downturned Corners Of The Mouth

A doctor can also use Botox around the mouth to lift the corners and make someone look younger and uplifted.

Doctors use Botox for downturned mouth corners even though the FDA has not approved it. However, many patients have seen great results with this technique when performed by a qualified and experienced injector.

Chin Enhancement

Another widespread use of Botox is for chin enhancement. Doctors can inject Botox into the chin to make it look more defined and contoured. This can help improve the overall balance and symmetry of the face, giving a more youthful appearance. The results are subtle.

While this use of Botox is also not FDA-approved, many patients have been happy with the result.

Lip Flip

Another popular technique involving Botox is the “lip flip.” The doctor carefully injects a small amount of Botox on top of the upper lip to relax muscles and give a slight upward curve. This effect can make the lips appear fuller without the need for fillers. Many people opt for the lip flip as a less invasive alternative to enhance their smile and achieve a more youthful look.

Where to go for your Botox treatment in Christchurch

To find Botox in Christchurch, look for a clinic specialising in cosmetic treatments. Make sure the clinic has a good track record of success. Ideally, a doctor should always be on site when you have a Botox treatment.

Before getting the treatment, ask friends or family who have had Botox or read online reviews for recommendations.

Why should you go to a doctor-led clinic for your Botox?

In New Zealand, doctors must have a specialised degree in cosmetic medicine to perform Botox injections. The degree usually takes two to three years and includes regular courses, workshops, and exams. Some doctors with similar degrees can work with a cosmetic medicine doctor, a skin specialist, or a plastic surgeon.

At this stage, nurses do not need a formal degree to practice cosmetic medicine. They often complete several courses and workshops, but there is no standardised degree like there is for doctors.

Nurses can work under the supervision of a specialist doctor located in another city. This means the doctor can only advise by phone or in writing, which could be a problem if more serious complications happen.

Doctors can:

  • Deal with complications.
  • Have deep and complex knowledge of cosmetic medicine.
  • Can supervise nurses and help if they are in the same clinic.

What is Botox?

Let’s start with a little fun fact—did you know that Botox was an accidental discovery? In the 1980s, Dr. Alan Scott studied a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. This bacterium causes food poisoning, and researchers use it in bioweapon research.

Years later, scientists discovered that Botox can relax the tiny muscles of the face and thereby treat wrinkles. When the muscles under the skin relax, the skin on top of the muscle has more space to stretch, making the skin look less wrinkly.

While Botox is technically a branded drug of pharmaceutical company Allergan, other cosmetic injectables like Dysport and Xeomin are generally similar. They all share a common process and goal – to block signals from our nerves that cause our muscles to contract.

Are There Possible Side Effects with Botox?

Botox treatments have been around for decades and will continue to do so for many reasons, one of which is safety. After getting an injection, some people may experience temporary side effects. These side effects are common and not a safety concern.

● Bruising or swelling on the injected area. The most common side effect will eventually subside over 7 to 10 days. Bruises are usually small, and you should be able to cover them with make-up.

● Numbness or weakness in the surrounding muscles.

● Headaches for 1 to 2 days, although this rarely happens. Some people may also temporarily experience mild flu symptoms or feel unwell.

● Either eye tearing or dryness.

● Drooping eyelids, which is another rare side effect. The movement of Botox typically causes it, but the effects should only persist for a few weeks. If this happens, make sure not to rub the affected area.

● Slight drooling or an uneven smile for Botox near the mouth.

Some before and aftercare advice for Botox

Here are a few things you can do before and after your treatment to help avoid bruising or prevent complications. But remember, for most people, it is a simple office procedure that does not require much preparation or aftercare.

Before Botox

● Don’t drink alcohol the evening before your Botox procedure.

● Don’t take aspirin or anti-inflammatory medicine at least two days before your Botox procedure.

● Apart from that, you can do everything as you would normally do.

After Botox

● Don’t go to saunas or hot rooms for at least 48 hours after your Botox procedure.

● Don’t do any strenuous exercise for the next 24 hours after your Botox procedure. Gentle exercise is ok.

● Don’t rub the injected area for 24 hours after your Botox procedure.

● Book a relaxing facial at least two weeks after your Botox procedure.
