How Botulinum Toxin Works

As we age, repeated facial expressions such as frowning, squinting, or raising the eyebrows gradually create lines and wrinkles in the skin. Over time, these facial muscles can remain more active even at rest, causing expression lines to become more noticeable.

Botulinum toxin works by temporarily relaxing selected facial muscles. When the muscle activity is reduced, the skin overlying these muscles is no longer pulled as strongly, allowing the skin to appear smoother and more refreshed.

The treatment is designed to soften dynamic lines while still maintaining natural facial expression. Results typically develop gradually over several days, with the full effect usually visible after around two weeks.

Most people begin to notice the effects of botulinum toxin treatment within a few days, with results gradually becoming more noticeable over the following 1–2 weeks. The full effect is typically visible after around two weeks.

Because results continue to develop during this period, we offer a complimentary follow-up consultation approximately two weeks after treatment to assess your result and make any minor adjustments if required.

Different types of botulinum toxin products can vary in how quickly they start working and how long the results may last. Newer formulations, such as Relfydess®, may begin working as early as 24 hours after treatment in some patients and can provide longer-lasting results, with effects sometimes lasting up to six months. Individual results and duration can vary depending on the treatment area, muscle activity, metabolism, and previous treatment history.

Botulinum toxin treatments typically last around 3 to 4 months, although the duration can vary between individuals depending on factors such as muscle strength, metabolism, treatment area, and previous treatment history.

Many patients find that with regular treatments, the effects may last longer over time as the treated muscles gradually become less active.

There are also different types of botulinum toxin products available, and some may last longer or begin working faster than others. Traditional formulations such as Botox® generally may not last quite as long as products such as Dysport® or Xeomin® in some patients. Newer formulations, including Relfydess®, may provide longer-lasting results, with effects that can last up to 6 months in selected patients.

During your consultation, our senior cosmetic doctor will discuss the most suitable treatment option for your goals, facial anatomy, and desired treatment duration.

Dr Nadja Haub offers a follow up appointment two weeks after each treatment, this can be done in the clinic or online. It is not uncommon to require a small top up dose especially if you have had the treatment for the first time. Only small amounts will be injected during a first appointment to check how you respond to Facial injectables and to avoid the frozen look.

 

 

Three internationally approved pharmaceutical companies worldwide produce different versions of botulinum toxin. A few studies have shown that Xeomin® and Dysport® have a slightly earlier onset of action and last longer compared to Facial injectables®. Noticeably, one unit of Xeomin® and Facial injectables® equals approximately 2.5 units of Dysport®.  Therefore this means that we have to inject 2.5 units of Dysport® to achieve the same effect as 1 unit of Facial injectables® or Xeomin®.

We charge 15 NZD per unit for Xeomin® and Facial injectables® and 5 NZD per unit Dysport®. The price difference is because one unit of Xeomin® or Facial injectables® equals approximately 2.5 units of Dysport®. Depending on the area injected, you will require different quantities.

Crows feet usually require between 12 to 24 units (36 to 60 units Dysport®), whereas the glabella between 12 to 16 Units (30 to 40 units of Dysport®) and the forehead 10 to 20 units (25 to 30 units of Dysport®). A lip flip usually requires between 4 to 12 units (10 to 30 units Dysport®).
