Karly Wins a Vampire Facial for a Fang-tastic Cause: Supporting Sumner School!

Karly Before her vampire facial

Introduction

Meet Karly who is a mother of two and an active member of her community.  She had always been a supporter of Sumner School, a popular primary school in the beautiful seaside suburb Sumner. The school provides a fantastic learning environment for our children, and they can thrive and develop into their own, little personalities.

In New Zealand, Sumner School is classified as a decile ten school which means that government funding is scarce. Due to that, the school heavily relies on donations from the parents and the wider community.  In view of this, Karly helped organise a fundraiser to support Sumner School.

Local businesses and individuals donated an array of exciting items for the auction, from luxury vacations to exclusive dining experiences. But what caught Karly’s attention was something rather unique – a “Vampire Facial” donated by Satini Cosmetic Clinic. Karly started bidding and became the lucky winner of this unique facial.

What benefits does the vampire facial have?

The “vampire facial” is a cosmetic procedure that has gained popularity in recent years. It is also known as the Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) facial, and it involves using a person’s own blood to rejuvenate the skin. While some people claim various benefits from this treatment, it’s important to note that the scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness is limited, and the results can vary from person to person. Here are some potential benefits associated with the vampire facial:

Skin Rejuvenation

Proponents of the vampire facial claim that it can help improve the texture and appearance of the skin. PRP is rich in growth factors, which may stimulate collagen production and promote healthier, more youthful-looking skin.

Reduced Fine Lines and Wrinkles

The growth factors inside the plasma stimulate the cells in your skin. As a result, the skin produces more elastin and collagen. This makes it look smoother, rejuvenated and less wrinkly.

Enhanced Skin Tone and Texture

PRP may help improve skin tone and texture by promoting cell turnover and minimizing the appearance of scars and blemishes.

Skin Tightening

The growth factors in PRP may aid in skin tightening, which can be beneficial for individuals seeking firmer skin.

Reduced Acne Scarring

The vampire facial helps reduce acne scarring. This is especially true for a certain type of scarring called the ice pickle scar.  An “ice pick scar” is a type of acne scar. Ice pick scars are deep, narrow, and pitted scars that often result from severe acne. These scars resemble small, deep holes or depressions in the skin, and they can give the skin a rough and uneven texture.

Natural-Looking Results

Since the procedure uses a person’s own blood, it is a natural way to enhance your appearance without the use of synthetic fillers or chemicals.

The First Step Of The Vampire Facial, We Draw Blood

The vampire facial begins with us taking some blood from you. This involves several steps:

  1. Blood Collection: First, a small amount of your own blood is taken from your arm using a small needle and syringe. This is just like when you have blood drawn for a regular blood test. We take a total of 11 ml of blood from you per vial. You have more than 4 litres of blood in your body, so this is actually a small amount.
  2. Anti-Clotting: To keep the blood from turning into a solid clot, a special liquid called an anticoagulant is added to it. Think of this as adding a preservative to keep the blood liquid.
  3. Spin in a Machine: Next, the blood is put into a machine called a centrifuge. Imagine a machine that spins things really fast, like a clothes dryer, but much faster and safer. This machine spins your blood around very quickly.
  4. Separation: Because the blood is spinning so fast, it separates into different parts based on their weight. The heaviest part, which is the red blood cells, goes to the bottom. The middle part contains platelets, and the top part is the plasma.
  5. Plasma Collection: The top part, which is the plasma, is carefully taken out using a special tool. This plasma is rich in growth factors that help your skin rejuvenate.

Microneedling or injection: There are two primary methods for applying the PRP to the face during a vampire facial. At Satini Cosmetic Clinic, we prefer to use injections. In our experience, this provides superior results. But if you do not like the thought of having injections, we are more than happy to accommodate you.

a. Microneedling: In this method, tiny needles are used to create micro-injuries on the skin’s surface. The PRP is then applied topically and is absorbed through these microchannels. This stimulates collagen production and rejuvenates the skin.

b. Injection: In this case, the PRP is directly injected into specific areas of the face. For that, the doctor can target areas with fine lines, wrinkles, or acne scars. This method is more precise and more effective but is also slightly more uncomfortable.

Is the Vampire Facial painful?

The level of pain or discomfort during a vampire facial can vary from person to person. Some people may find the procedure relatively painless, while others may experience mild to moderate discomfort.

Dr Nadja Haub says

Every body is different, really. Some people say the procedure does not hurt much and others desribe the level of discomfort as 6 out of 10. Before the facial, we apply a potent numbing cream, and that usually takes the egde off quite a bit. To further prevent any pain, we use the smallest and most gentle needle possible.

It’s essential to discuss your pain tolerance and any concerns with the practitioner performing the vampire facial so they can take steps to make you as comfortable as possible.

What Aftercare Instructions do I need to follow?

  • Do keep the area clean. You should gently clean your face with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser for the first few days following the procedure. Avoid using harsh or abrasive products that could irritate your skin.
  • Do keep well hydrated and rest plenty
  • Don’t drink any alcohol for 3 days. Drinking alcohol can increase your risk of bruising and can damage the growth factors in the plasma.
  • Don’t apply ice packs. The growth factors in your plasma work best at body temperature.
