How does Cosmelan® work?

Cosmelan® is a combined at home and in clinic treatment.

In simple terms, Cosmelan® performs two main actions to reduce hyperpigmentation.

Firstly, we will apply a Cosmelan® mask that exfoliates the skin to an even skin tone by removing layers of dead skin cells that have built up over time (the peel). We will ask you to keep the mask on for 8 to 12 hours.

Secondly, the mask will be followed by regular at home Cosmelan® treatments in the form of peels or creams which will inhibit the production of melanin which is responsible for creating the color/tone of your skin and is the root cause of dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

The active ingredients are highly effective yet surprisingly gentle on the skin to ensure that you experience great results that are comfortable and pain free.

What is the treatment like?

Step 1: Initial Consultation

We will carefully assess your skin and discuss the best treatment options for your personal skin concerns. It is not unusual that we recommend you to try out a cream or a medication first. This depends on your specific skin problem.

Step 2: Cosmelan Peel Mask.

Once we agree that Cosmelan Peel is the best -and also a safe- treatment option for you, we will apply a Cosmelan Mask. Depending on your skin colour, this mask will have to stay on between 8 to 12 hours. As a guidance the darker your skin the longer it will have to stay on.

Step 3: Homecare following Cosmelan Peel

You can wash the Cosmelan Peel off at home with some clear water. After that, it is important to apply the Mesoetetic Melan recovery cream. This will comfort the skin and protect moisture.

It is not unusual to experience 2 to 7 days of mild to heavy peeling. Sometimes you can develop swelling and redness. On the second day after the mask we will provide you with a comprehensive and detailed treatment plan that you can follow at home.

It is important that you use Melan 130+ Pigment Control every day. This is an ultra protective sunscreen that ensures that you do not get exposed to sun.

Step 5: Reapply Cosmelan Peel

We will ask you to come in after one month for your second in clinic mask. This ensures that you obtain maximum results. After the mask you can resume the same at home treatment program as before this mask.

Is treatment with Cosmelan® painful?

The treatment is virtually pain free. Most people will only feel some mild to moderate discomfort post treatment with peeling and dryness in certain areas.

Is Cosmelan® safe and who is a good candidate for it?

As the Cosmelan Depigmentation treatment is safe for all ethnicities and skin tones, anyone seeking out a fresher, more even complexion is an ideal candidate.

How long do the results last?

Long-term benefits depend on how well you look after your skin after the treatment.

We usually recommend using the Cosmelan 2 cream two or three times per week, even lifelong. This is to prevent uneven pigmentation from reoccurring.

It is paramount that you use sunscreen daily, even during the winter. Your sunscreen should be SPF 50+.

How often can I have the Cosmelan Mask?

This really depends on how well you look after your skin after the treatment.

Every person reacts differently to the treatment. Some people have the Cosmelan Mask once every year. Most people every few years.
