Frequently Asked Questions
IPL stands for intense pulsed light. Light has got different wavelengths, for example, red light has got a wavelength of 620 to 750 nanometers whereas green light has got a shorter wavelength. IPL is light that is filtered through a crystal so that only a few wavelengths of light get to your skin. These are typically wavelengths that will be absorbed by brown colour (for example pigment) or red colour (for example vessels with blood in them).
When these colours absorb light, they develop heat and become damaged. As a result, brown spots and redness on your face will fade.

IPL does not work very well for a skin condition called melasma, a brownish type of pigmentation that is caused by hormonal changes in your body. It is therefore important that one of our doctors assesses your face carefully before any IPL treatment. This is to make sure that you are a suitable candidate for this treatment. If our doctor examines you and thinks that you have got melasma, we would recommend different forms of treatment for you.

IPL is a very gentle treatment and side effects are very rare. You can experience some redness and maybe even mild swelling in your face after the procedure. But this can be covered with make-up. Occasionally, the skin can become a bit darker or brighter after an IPL Facial but this will usually resolve within a few weeks. It is very important that you use a high-quality, SPF 50+ sunscreen after the treatment to avoid any inflammation, redness or colour change of your skin.
