Adult acne needs a more considered approach than simply using the harshest cleanser available. Breakouts may coexist with dehydration, sensitivity, early signs of ageing or post-inflammatory pigmentation. A routine that strips the skin can leave it sore without addressing the factors driving the acne.

Dermalogica’s Active Clearing products are the most relevant starting point for adult breakout-prone skin. The aim is to keep pores clear, reduce avoidable irritation, support the skin barrier and protect post-acne marks from ultraviolet exposure.

Skincare may help mild acne, but painful, cystic, persistent or scarring acne should be medically assessed. Early treatment can reduce the risk of long-term scars.

A simple Dermalogica routine for adult acne

Morning

  1. Cleanse with a small amount of Dermalogica Active Clearing Skin Wash, or use a gentler cleanser if twice-daily salicylic-acid cleansing feels drying.
  2. Apply Dermalogica AGE Bright Clearing Serum gradually rather than starting every active at once.
  3. Use a lightweight moisturiser such as Dermalogica Breakout Biotic Moisturiser or Active Moist, depending on tolerance and skin type.
  4. Finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen suitable for breakout-prone skin.

Evening

  1. Remove makeup and sunscreen without aggressive scrubbing.
  2. Cleanse gently. If the skin feels tight or irritated, alternate Active Clearing Skin Wash with a bland cleanser.
  3. Apply one targeted acne product.
  4. Moisturise, including when the skin is oily. Dehydrated, irritated skin is not a sign that treatment is working better.

Active Clearing Skin Wash

Active Clearing Skin Wash is a foaming cleanser containing salicylic acid and lactic acid. Dermalogica positions it to help clear clogged follicles and smooth dull surface cells, with botanical extracts including tea tree, eucalyptus and balm mint.

It can be useful for oily or congested adult skin, but a cleanser remains on the skin for a relatively short period. It should not be expected to manage moderate or severe acne by itself.

Begin once daily if you are sensitive. Reduce the frequency if the skin becomes tight, persistently red or flaky. Very dry or reactive skin may need a gentler cleanser with acne treatment delivered through a leave-on product instead.

AGE Bright Clearing Serum

AGE Bright Clearing Serum combines salicylic acid with ingredients selected to support brighter, more even-looking skin, including niacinamide and white shiitake mushroom.

This makes it particularly relevant when adult breakouts coexist with post-blemish marks and visible signs of ageing. Introduce it slowly, especially if you already use a retinoid, benzoyl peroxide, exfoliating toner or prescription treatment.

Using more than one salicylic-acid product does not automatically improve results. A salicylic cleanser plus a leave-on salicylic serum may be too much for some people. Start with one change, observe the skin for at least one to two weeks and adjust from there.

Breakout Biotic Moisturiser

Breakout Biotic Moisturiser is a lightweight gel moisturiser designed for breakout-prone adult skin. It includes salicylic acid, niacinamide, jojoba and a prebiotic blend, and is positioned to hydrate while supporting the skin barrier and microbiome.

Because it also contains an acne active, review the total routine before combining it with several exfoliating products. If the skin is already dry from acne treatment, a simpler moisturiser without an additional active may be more comfortable.

What about hormonal acne?

Skincare can help keep pores clear and support the barrier, but it cannot always control the hormonal drivers of acne. Breakouts concentrated around the jawline and lower face, flares linked to the menstrual cycle or new acne associated with other hormonal symptoms may need medical assessment.

Do not keep escalating cosmetic products if acne is becoming painful, leaving scars or affecting confidence. A clinician can assess whether prescription topical or oral treatment is appropriate.

Adult acne and post-acne pigmentation

Red or brown marks can remain after a blemish has settled. The most important steps are to control new inflammation, avoid picking and use sunscreen consistently. Niacinamide, salicylic acid and selected brightening products may support a more even appearance, but improvement takes time.

Raised, depressed or tethered acne scars are structural changes and usually will not be removed by home skincare. They may require procedures chosen according to scar type and skin tone.

Mistakes that commonly make adult acne worse

  • Cleansing repeatedly throughout the day.
  • Using a scrub, salicylic cleanser, acid toner and retinoid all at once.
  • Skipping moisturiser because the skin is oily.
  • Picking or squeezing inflamed lesions.
  • Changing the entire routine every week.
  • Treating persistent or scarring acne as a cosmetic problem only.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dermalogica good for adult acne?

Dermalogica offers cleansers, leave-on treatments and moisturisers designed for adult breakout-prone skin. They may support mild acne, but persistent, painful or scarring acne often needs medical treatment.

Can I combine AGE Bright Clearing Serum with retinol?

Potentially, but do not begin both together. Alternate evenings initially and reduce frequency if dryness or irritation develops. Ask for advice if you use prescription retinoids.

Should I use Clear Start or Active Clearing?

Clear Start is positioned primarily for younger breakout-prone skin, while Active Clearing addresses adult breakouts and visible ageing concerns. Skin needs matter more than age alone, but the ranges should not be treated as identical.

Is adult acne caused by dirty skin?

No. Acne is not evidence of poor hygiene. Excessive washing can irritate the skin and does not correct hormonal or inflammatory drivers.

When to book an acne consultation
