AHA & BHA Exfoliants

AHAs and BHAs are two families of chemical exfoliants that gently dissolve the bonds holding dull, dead skin cells to the surface — revealing fresher, smoother, more radiant skin underneath. Unlike harsh physical scrubs, they work without abrasion, making them a smart way to refine texture, even out tone and keep skin clear. The key difference between them comes down to whether they’re water-loving or oil-loving.

AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids)

AHAs are water-soluble acids that work on the skin’s surface to lift away dead cells and boost radiance. They’re brilliant for dryness, dullness, uneven tone, pigmentation and the early signs of ageing, and many also help attract moisture into the skin. Common AHAs include glycolic acid (the smallest molecule, fast-acting and great for resurfacing), lactic acid (gentler and hydrating), and mandelic acid (larger and well-suited to sensitive skin). Best for: dull, dry, sun-damaged or ageing skin.

BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acids)

BHAs are oil-soluble, which means they can penetrate deeper into the pores to clear out excess oil and debris from the inside. Salicylic acid is the best-known BHA — naturally anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, it’s ideal for breakouts, blackheads, congestion and oily or combination skin. Best for: acne-prone, oily and congested skin.

Which should you choose?

If your focus is brightening, smoothing and hydrating, reach for an AHA. If you’re battling breakouts, blackheads or oiliness, a BHA is your hero. Many people use both — and some products combine the two for all-round results. Whichever you choose, always follow with a broad-spectrum SPF, as exfoliating acids increase sun sensitivity.
