Dry and dehydrated skin are often discussed as if they are the same, but the distinction matters when choosing skincare.

Dry skin produces less oil and may feel rough, tight or flaky. Dehydrated skin lacks water and can occur in any skin type, including oily skin. It may look dull, show fine surface lines or feel tight after cleansing while still becoming shiny through the day.

Many people have both. The most effective routine is usually not the one with the greatest number of products. It is the one that cleanses gently, adds water where needed, replaces or protects lipids where needed and prevents further moisture loss.

A simple morning routine

1. Cleanse only as much as necessary

If the skin is very dry, a water rinse may be sufficient in the morning. If you prefer a cleanser, Dermalogica UltraCalming Cleanser is a non-foaming option for dry, sensitive or reactive skin.

Avoid chasing a “squeaky clean” feeling. Tightness immediately after cleansing often means the cleanser, water temperature or cleansing frequency is too aggressive.

2. Add hydration

Dermalogica Circular Hydration Serum is designed to support hydration with an enhanced form of hyaluronic acid, an algae-derived moisturising matrix, polyglutamic acid and water-binding sugars and amino acids.

Apply a small amount after cleansing, ideally while the skin is slightly damp rather than dripping wet. A hydrating serum should usually be followed by moisturiser; otherwise, it may not be enough on its own for dry skin.

3. Choose the right moisturiser texture

Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream is a practical starting point for normal-to-dry skin. It is designed to provide sustained hydration and reduce transepidermal water loss.

For drier, depleted or lipid-poor skin, Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Balance offers a richer option focused on replenishing barrier lipids. Very dry or mature skin may prefer Dermalogica Super Rich Repair, particularly at night or during colder weather.

Use how the skin feels several hours later as your guide. A moisturiser is probably too light if tightness quickly returns, and too rich if it feels persistently greasy or contributes to congestion.

4. Finish with broad-spectrum sunscreen

Daily sunscreen is important even when dryness is the main concern. Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF50 combines a medium-weight moisturiser with broad-spectrum SPF50 and often suits normal, dry or combination skin.

Apply sunscreen generously to the face, ears, neck and exposed upper chest. A moisturiser with SPF still needs to be used in an adequate amount to provide its labelled protection.

A simple evening routine

1. Remove sunscreen and makeup gently

If you wear makeup or water-resistant sunscreen, begin with Dermalogica Precleanse to dissolve oil-based residue. Emulsify it with water and rinse, then use a gentle water-based cleanser if a second cleanse is needed.

Double cleansing is useful when there is something substantial to remove. It is not compulsory every morning and evening, and over-cleansing can worsen dryness.

2. Repeat hydration if needed

Circular Hydration Serum can be used again in the evening. If the skin is irritated, keep the rest of the routine simple rather than adding exfoliating acids or a new retinoid at the same time.

3. Seal with moisturiser

Use Skin Smoothing Cream, Intensive Moisture Balance or Super Rich Repair according to the skin’s needs. It is reasonable to use a lighter moisturiser by day and a richer one at night.

Where does exfoliation fit?

Dry skin can accumulate surface cells, but more exfoliation is not always the answer. Dermalogica Daily Milkfoliant is the gentlest powder option in the range and may be used once or twice weekly as a starting point.

Pause exfoliation if the skin is burning, visibly inflamed, cracked or peeling. Restore comfort first. If you also use retinol or an acid serum, alternate evenings rather than layering several active products.

Common reasons a hydrating routine is not working

  • The cleanser is too foaming or is being used too often.
  • Hot water and long showers are increasing dryness.
  • A hydrating serum is being used without moisturiser.
  • Several exfoliants or retinoids are disrupting the barrier.
  • Sunscreen is being applied too sparingly.
  • The moisturiser texture is not rich enough for the climate or season.
  • The condition is not simple dryness; eczema, dermatitis, rosacea and medication effects can feel similar.

Frequently asked questions

Which Dermalogica moisturiser is best for very dry skin?

Intensive Moisture Balance is a useful choice for dry, depleted skin, while Super Rich Repair has a richer texture. Skin Smoothing Cream suits many people with normal-to-dry skin who do not want the heaviest option.

Can oily skin be dehydrated?

Yes. Oily skin can still lack water. A lightweight hydrating serum and gel moisturiser may feel better than a heavy cream, while harsh cleansing may make the problem worse.

Can I use hyaluronic acid every day?

Most people can. Apply it beneath moisturiser and reduce or stop any product that causes persistent irritation.

Why is my skin suddenly dry?

Weather, heating, travel, over-cleansing, retinoids, acne treatments, hormonal changes and skin conditions can all contribute. Sudden severe dryness, rash, swelling or persistent itch deserves assessment.
