Dermalogica Clear Start: A Simple Routine for Teenage Breakouts
Build a simple Dermalogica Clear Start routine for teenage breakouts with cleanser, targeted treatment, moisturiser and daily SPF.
By Dr Nadja Haub, Cosmetic Doctor and Director of Satini Cosmetic Clinic, Christchurch
Teenage acne can be frustrating, but the starting routine should be simple. More products, stronger scrubs and repeated cleansing do not automatically clear breakouts faster. They often leave the skin tight, red and harder to treat.
Dermalogica Clear Start is designed for younger, breakout-prone skin. A sensible routine has four jobs: cleanse, treat, moisturise and protect. Introduce one active product at a time so you can see what helps and what irritates.
The basic Clear Start routine
Morning
- Cleanse gently with Breakout Clearing Foaming Wash.
- Apply Breakout Clearing Booster only where needed, or as a thin layer if advised.
- Use a lightweight moisturiser.
- Finish with broad-spectrum sunscreen.
Evening
- Remove makeup and sunscreen.
- Cleanse gently.
- Apply the chosen breakout treatment.
- Moisturise.
That is enough for most beginners. Do not add a scrub, acid toner, spot paste and retinol on the same day.
Step 1: Breakout Clearing Foaming Wash
Dermalogica Breakout Clearing Foaming Wash contains 0.5% salicylic acid and is designed to remove excess oil and surface cells that contribute to clogged pores. Dermalogica also includes botanical ingredients such as tea tree, lavender and camellia sinensis.
Lather a small amount in damp hands and wash gently. There is no need to scrub or use a cleansing brush. The product can also be used on breakout-prone areas of the neck, chest or back.
Start once daily if the skin is sensitive. If the face becomes tight, flaky or sore, alternate it with a gentler cleanser rather than assuming the dryness is necessary.
Step 2: Breakout Clearing Booster
Dermalogica Breakout Clearing Booster is a leave-on salicylic-acid treatment. It can be applied directly to blemishes or as a thin layer over breakout-prone areas beneath moisturiser.
Because the cleanser also contains salicylic acid, begin cautiously. Use the booster once daily or every second day at first rather than applying it repeatedly whenever a spot is noticed.
Inflamed acne should not be picked or squeezed. This increases the risk of prolonged redness, brown marks and scarring.
Step 3: Do not skip moisturiser
Oily skin still needs hydration. Acne products can make the skin dry and uncomfortable, and irritation may lead to more rubbing, picking or abandonment of the routine.
Dermalogica Skin Soothing Hydrating Lotion is a lightweight option designed to relieve dehydration and discomfort associated with breakouts and acne treatments.
Dermalogica Cooling Aqua Jelly has a water-light gel texture for oily skin that prefers a fresh, non-rich finish.
Choose one moisturiser. The best one is the texture that leaves the skin comfortable without feeling excessively greasy.
Step 4: Add daily sunscreen
Dermalogica Clearing Defence SPF30 is a lightweight, shine-reducing option for breakout-prone skin. It helps protect against ultraviolet exposure that can worsen the appearance of post-breakout marks.
For longer outdoor activity in New Zealand, use adequate broad-spectrum protection, combine it with hats and shade, and reapply according to the product label. A daily facial SPF is not permission to stay in intense sun longer.
What teenagers should avoid
- Washing the face four or five times a day.
- Scrubbing with rough particles or cleansing brushes.
- Applying toothpaste, alcohol or household remedies to spots.
- Squeezing deep or inflamed pimples.
- Starting several active products at once.
- Sharing prescription acne medication.
- Expecting a completely clear result after one week.
How long should a routine be tried?
Skincare needs consistent use. Allow several weeks to judge tolerance and early improvement, unless there is a significant reaction. Take a simple photograph in the same lighting every two to four weeks rather than examining the skin repeatedly through the day.
If acne is clearly worsening, painful or scarring, do not wait months simply to finish the products.
When teenage acne needs medical assessment
Arrange a consultation when there are:
- Deep, painful nodules or cysts.
- Scars or persistent dark marks.
- Widespread acne on the face, chest or back.
- Significant distress, embarrassment or avoidance of school and social activities.
- No meaningful improvement despite a consistent routine.
- Sudden severe acne or other concerning symptoms.
Moderate or severe acne often needs prescription treatment. Skincare can support that treatment but should not delay it.
A note for parents
Acne is not caused by laziness or poor hygiene. Avoid repeatedly telling a teenager to wash more or stop eating a single food. Help them keep the routine simple, obtain treatment early when acne is scarring and focus on support rather than blame.
If a young person is distressed, withdrawn or being bullied because of their skin, that matters as much as the number of spots.
Frequently asked questions
Can a teenager use Breakout Clearing Foaming Wash twice daily?
Dermalogica positions it for morning and evening use, but sensitive or dry skin may tolerate it better once daily. Reduce frequency if tightness, redness or flaking develops.
Can Clear Start be used with prescription acne treatment?
Possibly, but prescription treatment may already be drying or exfoliating. Ask the prescriber which cleanser and moisturiser to use and which active products to pause.
Does moisturiser make acne worse?
An unsuitable heavy product may contribute to congestion, but skipping moisturiser can leave treated skin irritated. Choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic texture suited to the skin.
Should spots be dried out?
The aim is to treat acne without damaging the surrounding barrier. Severe dryness and peeling are not signs of better control.
Is Clear Start suitable for adult acne?
Some adults may like individual Clear Start products, but Dermalogica’s Active Clearing range is designed more specifically for adult breakouts and visible ageing concerns.
