Satini Topical Finasteride – Patient Information

This information is for patients who have been prescribed Satini Topical Finasteride by a New Zealand registered prescriber. It does not replace advice from your prescriber or pharmacist. Please read it before starting treatment and keep it for reference.

What it is

Satini Topical Finasteride is a prescription treatment for androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss), applied directly to the scalp. Finasteride blocks the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT causes hair follicles to shrink in people who are genetically prone to pattern hair loss. Applying finasteride to the scalp, rather than taking it as a tablet, is intended to act mainly where it’s needed, with less of the medicine reaching the bloodstream.

[If applicable: This is a compounded medicine prepared for you on prescription. It is not a Medsafe-approved product, and your prescriber has discussed this with you.]

How to use it

Use it exactly as your prescriber has directed. Apply it to a clean, dry scalp, and wash your hands well afterwards. Let it dry fully before your scalp touches pillows, hats or other people.

What to expect

Hair loss treatment works slowly. Changes are usually not visible for at least 3–6 months, and full results can take longer. Treatment needs to continue to maintain results. If you stop, any benefit is likely to be gradually lost.

Possible side effects

The most common side effects are scalp irritation, itching or redness. Because some finasteride is absorbed, effects reported with finasteride tablets may also occur. These include reduced libido, erectile or ejaculation problems, breast tenderness, and mood changes including low mood or depression. If you notice any of these, stop using the product and contact your prescriber. Seek help urgently if you have thoughts of self-harm.

Important safety information

Pregnancy: Finasteride can harm an unborn male baby. Anyone who is pregnant or may become pregnant must not handle this product or touch treated skin before it has dried. Keep it out of reach of children.

Blood tests: Finasteride can lower PSA levels. Tell your doctor you are using it if you have a prostate (PSA) test.

Other medicines: Tell your prescriber about any other medicines or health conditions.

Storage

Store below 25°C, away from heat and direct sunlight, with the cap tightly closed. Do not use after the expiry date on the label.
